Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Guarantee against

Note Issue.

I have tho honour to transmit in original for

return, a letter dated this day, with enclosure, which we

have received from the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Cor-

poration requesting the release of 24 per cent Consols Cer-

tificates to the extent of £75,000 from the Securities

deposited with us against the note issue of that bank in

consequence of the Treasury Guarantee given to that Bank in

respect of the sum of £75,000 advanced by it to the Viceroy

of Wuchang.

We await the instructions of the Secretary of

State in the matter.
